The Rt Hon Lord (Swraj) Paul, Chairman of Caparo Group, is a leading businessman and an active member of the House of Lords, where he was appointed Deputy Speaker in December 2008 and made a Privy Counsellor in 2009.
Born in Jalandhar, India in 1931, he was educated at Punjab University (BSc 1949) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA (BSc and MSc 1952)
Lord Paul went to the U.K. in 1966 to seek medical treatment for his younger daughter, Ambika. After her untimely death he stayed in the UK and founded Caparo Group, the industrial company that now employs some 5000 people in its operations in seven countries including India.
He was granted a Peerage with the title Lord Paul of Marylebone by the British government in August 1996.
Lord Paul was appointed Chancellor of the University of Wolverhampton in 1999 and Chancellor of the University of Westminster in 2006. He has received fifteen honorary degrees from universities in the UK, USA, India and Russia.
Lord Paul is a member of the House of Lords Select Committee on the European Union and the European Union Internal Market.
He is involved in many charitable organizations including the Ambika Paul Foundation, a charitable trust set up in memory of his daughter who died in 1968.
Lord Paul was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 1983 and granted the Freedom of the City of London in 1998.
