Dr António Bensabat RendasRector, Universidade Nova de Lisboa Portugal

António Manuel Bensabat Rendas is the President of the Council of Rectors of the Portuguese Universities, position he has held since March 2010. He has also been the rector of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL) since January 2007.
Dr Rendas has had a long association with the UNL, holding many senior academic positions within its Faculty of Medical Sciences including as President of the FMS’s Pedagogic Council and as Vice- Dean (1990-1996) and Dean (1996-2006).
He holds a Medicine Degree from the University of Lisbon and a PhD in Experimental Pathology (pulmonary hypertension), Cardiothoracic Institute, University of London. He has been the recipient of a Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Scholarship, which saw him work as a Research Fellow and Honorary Registrar in the Department of Experimental Pathology, Brompton Hospital, Cardiothoracic Institute at the University of London. From 1977-1978, Dr Rendas was a Research Associate in Pathology, Department of Pathology, Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Harvard Medical School.
He has acted as a World Health Organization advisor and consultant in the fields of medical training and health materials and a member of the International Scientific Committee for the Monitoring of Medical Education.
Dr Rendas is the author and co-author of 138 lectures and 76 scientific articles, at national and international level, and of 2 books and 10 book chapters. His fields of research include respiratory physiology and patho-physiology, biomedical aging evaluation, as well as University management and performance indicators.
